It’s proved impossible for me to get this shot of former Philadelphia Police Cpt. Ray Lewis being arrested, published anywhere. I was adamantly rebuffed by the Philadelphia Inquirer, NYT, local NY papers, and Newsweek, before even looking at the photograph. One of the only published photos of this paradoxical and intense event is located here at the NYC Observer:

This shot from the movie The General is the most expensive shot in silent film history. It was filmed in a single take, that had to be perfect, with a real train and a ‘dummy’ engineer (notice the white arm hanging out the conductors window). Some of the locals who came to watch the filming, thought the dummy was a real person and screamed in horror; supposedly, one person even fainted.

After parcel post service was introduced in 1913, at least two children were sent by the service. With stamps attached to their clothing, the children rode with railway and city carriers to their destination. The Postmaster General quickly issued a regulation forbidding the sending of children in the mail after hearing of those examples.

to south africa’s credit:

student visa application to visa being approved - 18 days.

that’s really fast for a country who tells it’s applicants the processing takes some 6 months or longer (the actual proof of application says 30 days, but they strike that through before they hand it to you so it says nothing). it’s impressive.

to south africa’s discredit:

student visa application to visa in my passport - 121 days.

they never told me it was done. after applying mid-january, there was nothing but silence and promises to let me know what was happening and when it was done. as this never happened and the preliminiary six month estimate wasn’t reached yet, i presumed it was still lying around on someone’s desk waiting for what the bureaucratic systems i had to go there to find out what was going on to find out that my visa had been lying around for four months.

on the upside of it all: today is my first full day of legal residence in south africa in a really long time. yes!

in december of the year 2010, a big chair fell on my big toe. it was the toe on my right foot, my favourite foot. it was very sore and i screamed and might even have sworn. the next day was a basketball tournament, one that i was excited for, considering i had hardly played in the last few years (it was also a oliebollen tournooi, which means that it can in no way be taken seriously).

i woke up the next morning and found that my toe wasn’t sore at all, in fact, it was hard to find any evidence that i indeed had been in so much pain the night before. a dark dark patch of blood did slowly accumulate under my nail, causing most people that saw to say things like “that’s definitely coming off” and “you’re going to lose that one”.

the dark patch remained dark and hardly moved. first for days, then for weeks. after three months, it might have moved up a centimeter, a third of the way across the great plain of my toenail, not a lot at all.

come last week, it was half a year to the incident. my nail had never fallen off, nor did it seem to grow, though i cut it regularily, so i thought. it was during one of these regular cutting sessions that the nail did finally appear a little loose. upon tugging on it quite hard there was just a hint of motion, and i decided to operate. barbaric and primitive to be sure, an interesting experience nevertheless. armed with a knife and tiny nailclippers, i tackled the nail.

turns out, i had 5 toenails, four of which were loose and not connected to each other, stacked one on the other, all lying on a bottom nail that was growing rather slowly under this heavy burden.

it was a strange day.
